Richard, it was too long ago that I researched our forum regarding the MCM and pre 09 KLX's.. But I think I remember cam part number comparisons and cam spec comparisons between the years.. Anyway, back to the flywheel...

Well I took it for a good spin. If I didn't know better I wouldn't have even noticed the lighter flywheel at slow speeds on the road, taking off from a light etc. So no probs in that regard.

It's still fast of course, but it's just hard to tell without a time clock or a competitor next to me to evaluate before/after. Speed's kind of relative; if the road is narrow and there are houses etc whizzing by me I can get a better sense of speed than on a section of open road with open fields next to me etc

It seems to be buzzing up to max rpm quicker, but it's just hard to tell

No reason not to do it

I might try the P8 needle jet with the needle in the middle or richer

Here's the tool I had made up to pull/install the flywheel

Big center bolt to coax the flywheel out with the turned down 9/16 bolts going into the flywheel itself. Cost me maybe $15 incl the bolts

It worked great!

^^ Reminds me of the valve spring compressor I 'fabbed' to pull my head apart.
My SV1000 had a design change on the flywheel-the later models used a lighter flywheel and it does make a difference on acceleration. It also makes the motor a bit more 'jerky' at low revs compared to the original unit. For what I use the KLX for(primarily off road), I would leave it alone.

If you are looking for more snap just add nitrous...and a quick shifter.

I can shift quick with just a little left foot preload on the shifter then tap the clutch lever..
