Default 2006 KLX 250 low power up top

Picked up a used '06 KLX 250 with low miles, looks mostly stock besides a pipe on it. It seems a little low on power. I thought about it being a small cc bike, but it doesn't seem to want to rev past 6k rpms... and when it does, it doesn't make much more power and it takes forever to wind out, feels like bloody murder! Haven't revved it past 8k yet... can't imagine going to redline at 10,500pms...

The bike has a "Big Gun Evo X Series" pipe on it, and the previous owner said he did a small jet change on the carb for the pipe, but...

I think I read somewhere on here that these bikes run a little lean from the factory ? I wonder if this bike isn't getting enough fuel up top...

Anyone have a recommended jet size for this pipe? I don't know much about this carb type or bike yet at all. Or is this just how these engines run?

Buy a DynoJet kit. Or at least add a washer under the needle to raise it a bit.
Also check your float height. Is your air filter clean?

Here's a spreadsheet that may give you some clues about other owner's jetting.

The bike could be lean or rich enough to prevent maxing out RPM. You probably want to pull that carb and see what's in it. And when you say it won't go past 8K rpm, is that in any gear?

Welcome to KF.

you could pull the choke out some while riding, if your get more power then you are lean.

I'll look into the DynoJet kits, didn't know they existed for this bike. Air filter should be spotless, but I'll check it too.

Great, thank you, I'll take a look through that Carb Jet info soon. That is pretty much in every gear. Don't get me wrong, it will go, but it just feels like it doesn't want to. Not that it boggs or anything

I'll give that a try soon. I did notice that the issue got worse the hotter the engine got, which makes me think it is lean. But I'm just guessing.

Any way to monitor the AFRs or anything?

All I see on DynoJet.com is kit #2152 for 09-14 KLX250S. Do they have anything for the 2006 models?

It's a 250, if you wanted to go, you need a 650.

The dynojet for the KLX300 will work.
