WAHOOOOO CHEERS ALL AROUND!!!! YOU HAD THE MAGIC REPAIR!!

What happened is I had got a switch through Ebay and the seller as I looked back up stated it was for an 06/07 that upon tear down today must have been from earlier models.. THERE WAS NO DIODE!! So out of what was remaining of my old make shift switch that I had rode with last I removed the resister and Soldered it into the new switch and spark.. Packed all the wiring together and put everything back she rumbled to life..

I am baffled about this little resister. It says no where in the factory service manuals or even in the Schematics for this bike about a resister being in the flow path of the main switch.

So now on to cleaning the carb which was not bad even for sitting for a year and a half.

SO AGAIN HUGE THANKS>>> HOPEFULLY SOME ONE ELSE CAN USE THIS INFORMATION TO HELP THEM TOO>>

Please, find it in here and explain it to us. I think I'm blind when it comes to reading these diagrams.

You are WELCOME. Glad to help.

It's a good thing that Richard Avatar mentioned it needing a new switch and you replying it had a new one. Or I would have never even thought of it. I think its not in the manual because it is a security device. Its a secret that hooligans like us shouldn't know about.

After breaking out my magnifying glass, it seems that the only thing that part of the circuit is connected to the kill switch. Complete the circuit(bk/y-bk/w wires) kills spark but apparently they designed the ignitor to need some type of feedback through that resistor so that it will operate. This is the kind of B/S that some manufacturers incorporate that drive technicians nuts. It's not documented in any of the repair info and it causes many hours(months) of trying to figure out WTF is wrong. If you had not run across this Nate would still be lost(as would most of us). Good catch!

Alright, everyone needs to knock it off. Scott's head is already massive enough that he has trouble find a helmet to fit. Keep it up and he'll just have to wrap it in bubble wrap and duct tape.

Scott, I get the concept of why/how the resistor is working, but I still don't see it in the schematic. Is it a special symbol or something? That said, I wonder if the stolen bike thread currently running where it looks like the thieves were trying to hot wire the bikes but were unsuccessful is due to the resistor?

I only see resistors on the start circuit relay and the fan relay...interesting.

I don't think it is in the schematic. I'm under the impression that these thieves know how to steal something, but they are amateurs when it comes to motorcycles, otherwise they wouldn't be doing this damage in their unsuccessful attempts to start the bikes.

This is also a reason why I and others have been cautious to discuss the resistor. It helped Nathan out. But when thieves find threads like this, will they be more successful? There was one guy over on ADV, new account, low posts, who "just bought a KLR without a key." He wanted to know how to hot wire it. We were reluctant to offer much help.

My swollen head hurts.

I think the ignition resistor is "sort of" shown in the '09 wiring diagram by a line bridging the switch BK/W to BK/Y contacts.

You're right. It's not shown at all in the 06 schematic, but *somewhat* shown in the 09.

IDRIDR has a good point about thieves benefiting from this discussion. I think I will shut up now
