RE: 12 T front sprocket

A 12 tooth will turn the chain pretty tight. Also it will make the chain run tighter on the deflectors that protect the swing arm. With extra wear and tear on all the parts in the long run i'll bet it's cheaper to go with the larger rear sprocket.

RE: 12 T front sprocket

I just received a 48 tooth rear sprocket and 110 link chain from Rocky Mountain ATV. I went with Primary Drive brand components because they were out of Renthal 48t sprockets and o-ring 110 link chains. Also wasn't sure if I would like the gearing so the cheaper components made sense. Together they were a $75 shipped. Probably won't have time to get them installed until this weekend, but hopefully will work out ok.

so the klx 300 front sprocket is the one to buy to fit. also how much of a difference could you tell when you went to the 13T iowaguy?
NO!!! the KLX 300 front sprocket will NOT fit your 250. You want one for a Honda XR650L or a Ninja 250EX. trust me on this. do a search on this forum before you order any part if you are unsure if it will fit or not. denniskirk.com sells them and they are dirt cheap. you will not need a spacer if you order the right one. also, do not listen to all this rubbish of wear and tear on parts. if a chain is adjusted properly it is going to run on parts the same as if it's going around a 12,13,14,20 tooth front sprocket. only thing it could wear is the chain and that's better than buying a new one now and wasting your oem one. sure if a chain is too tight it will wear things out faster, but it's all about getting it adjusted. but if you want my honest opinion, i hate the looks of the rear sprocket and that's essentially why i upgraded the chain and rear sprocket over time- i wanted 13/45 and love renthal sprockets in the back. but that did cost me more. if you want an immediate feel in performance, i'd go with a 13 toother up front and wait a while and then upgrade to a longer 108 link chain and any 45-tooth rear sprocket. i paid $60 for my 108 linkparts unlimited x-ring chain from denniskirk.com and then I bought a steel, cheap 45-toother which i just sold and replaced with a renthal which i should have bought first. i wanted to save money, but i like the look of the renthal and just received it and put it on yesterday. like i said, it's your money. but a 13-toother will immediately increase your low end. and then you can use it later when you add a new chain eventually and a 45 tooth rear. good luck.

i was thinkin i could go with a 12 tooth sprocket off a klx 300 instead of gettin a 48 tooth rear and it would be the same thing but with less cost. i was also wondering if i would need a different chain. i dont think i do but just askin. would this be an ok setup compared to goin with the 48 rear sprocket
well, not surisingly i am going to dissentfrom popular opinion. I say go ahead and do it as that's a clever way of lowering gearing and for a fraction of the cost of a new chain and rear sprocket. Look at it this way- if it does wear the chain quicker which i don't necessarily believe that it will as no one has solid evidence supporting this, you'll have to eventually replace it. But why waste a perfectly good oem chain now and invest say, $120 in a new chain and rear sprocket? Buy the $12 sprocket and use it until you have to replace the chain. IMO it's not a smart move to waste the oem chain when you can use it and save money currentlyusinga cheaper frontsprocket. The oem chain isn't all that bad. When I use to MX I used one chain for a year- the oem kawasaki one. Sure they'll stretch but highly likely they'll break. And as far as noise, I use a 13-tooth and I've stuck my head down there and hear no abnormal noises. Just sounds like a sprocket going around with a chain on it. It's your money though, you spend it the way you wish.
Good morning Iowa :D I think I have actually figured out why I think I hear what I call more noise since I changed the front sprocket from the OEM 14 tooth to a 13 tooth. The stock sprocket that came on our bikes has the rubber dampener built in which lets the chain ride on some of that rubber, which makes for a pretty quiet chain/sprocket noise. So maybe the noise I am hearing now is actually normal. Like I have said in the past I'm really a noob in all of this, learning as I go, and respecting all of the ideas and comments in here. So take what I always say with a grain of salt.;)
hey deej-
good to hear from you. you know how i am, i talk out of my ass a lot and offer up my dissents and opinions. i mean well all the time though and actually post pretty experienced advice but it's not the gospel like i think.;)
i, like you, think the 13 tooth sprocket was the most noticeable mod performance-wise next to the pipe that i ever bolted onto my 250. it's a gem of a mod that people probably don't respect enough to actually swap out. it totally changes the way the bike makes power imo. you?
later buddy.

Iowaguy Is right the KLX 300 front sprocket wont fit!! This is what I put on.

AFAM sprocket
Part # 24502 13tooth 520 pitch
Phone # 1-800-290-9040
It says it is for a EX/KLR 250-650cc 1987-96 But it is a direct bolt on..I did not need a spacer! I didn't notice any more noise than the stock one. If you have your hart set on a 12 tooth than maybe you can use this info to get a 12t instead of 13t. Good luck and lets us know how you make out...:D:D

Hey Iowa, yea I really think the 13 tooth is the best mod for instant and inexpensive power. Hey speaking of the 13 tooth, do you have a brand, model # for a 13 tooth with the shoulder built in that fits our bike, I really want to get that spacer out of there. Its probably pretty rusty buy now, since it was machined.

so if the klx 300 front sprocket doesn't fit what about the rear if i wanted the 48 tooth

I think S Dunne ran a 12 tooth when racing, look at the early 2006 posts under his name .

You newbies really need to learn how to use the search...lmfao

Anyway, here's the list of sprockets and part numbers that I've compiled:

JT Sprockets: JTF516-13
Sprocket Specialists: 514XK-13
Sunstar: 34113
Kimpex: 101006

The Kimpex has the shoulder built in, so no spacer is needed. Didn't notice any increase in chain noise, either. The only thing that would have made the whole experience better was if it was easier to loosen the dam nut to get the sprocket off!!! (Yes, I did unbend the retaining washer beforehand ... it was still a bitch to get off!)

Hope this helps!

Mike
