Default 09 KLX250S Cooling Fan

Here's something I wanted to throw out to the senior members for discussion. I was looking at the cooling fan and noticing it probably weighs quite a bit. One of the things that happens when you lean an engine out (as Kawasaki does with our new bikes to meet EPA standards) is the the cylinder head temperature increases significantly. Most of the mods performed on the bike richen up the mixture and allow it to breath much better. I suspect that the modified bike's CHT is much lower. Has anyone tried removing the cooling fan on a modded bike? I'm wondering if the thing ever kicks on since the bike should be running cooler. You don't see cooling fans on KX250's.

Yep, tried that.

Posted the results on here and here is my take.

I removed the fan and installed a warning light on the dash so i could see when the fan would have come on it was installed.
Light only came on once for about 20 seconds.
That was after a period of really tight technical stuff.

But, and it's a big but, that was quite a cool day.
Middle of our winter.

I didn't expect it would come on at all but given it did, I put the fan back on.

I decided to leave the light in place and I haven't seen it on since.
But it's still quite cool.

I know some people have removed the fan without issue but I decided that it wasn't worth the risk.
And besides, it wasn't nearly as heavy as it looked.

Mine is a modded 06 but I can't see that making much difference when compared to the 09.

Thanks, Neil. Good post. The fact that the light came on is a pretty good indicator that the bike runs on the warm side. I'll probably leave it on also. I'd hate to melt my new bike trying to save a few ounces of weight.

I rejetted my bike (128 main, 2.75 turns out, snorkel removed) and in the hard technical stuff, and getting stuck in deep sand, and constantly slipping the clutch, lotta first gear, the fan came on a fair amount. Granted I'm in Louisiana and the ambient temps were in the mid 90s... but unless I got going a good clip in 2nd, the fan was coming on pretty often. I'd never consider removing mine after yesterday's ride. I know the motor was getting hot.

Yeah, the summers are fairly hot and humid where I'm at. The most off roading I do is fire roads, but the fan comes on most while moving slowly up him or in stop-n-go traffic.

The KX250F was built to haul azz around a track, so it would be interesting to see how one would do in tight, technical stuff on a hot day. You hear about boil overs at the KLX300 forum.
