Can a 2wd rear diff be exchanged for a 4wd rear diff by mounting the transfer case unit from the 4wd diff to the 2wd diff. The 2wd diff has a machined fit and bolt holes on the side that looks as though they are interchangeable.

 

The gearbox cases are identical. The internals are different though
