Is this on a hot engine?

If so, look for air leaks - the vacum line is one possible source.

If it's only on a cold engine until you take the choke off, check the choke action, but otherwise odd idles while the motor's cold don't really mastter too much as long as it's OK when it's warmed up.

Welcome to the forums, chris. +1^ on William's comments. How long does the higher rev last? If it drops to normal when the engine gets warmed, I wouldn't worry too much.
Glad to have you aboard.
Gear up; stay safe.

yuppers. I will sit there with my 500 during warm up, and manually adjust the choke lever to maintain 1500 rpm lets say until it is warmed up before I turn the choke fully off.
