Default Shortening a new chain...Help!

I recently went on a ride across the state with about 12 other bikes. 3 miles away from the beach my chain snapped !!!! not fun , luckily wasnt at speed on the highway. Bought a new RK chain but its too long any ideas on a " do it yourself " way to shorten the new chain..any feedback would help..Thanx

I bought a chain breaking tool for maybe $15 from a local bike shop. It is almost impossible to do it without the tool in my experience. Good luck.

You can grind off the rivets then use a punch to shorten a chain. And/or you can use one of these.

edit: This tool will rivet the master link as well. (if you prefer an endless chain that is)

...and don't buy the cheaper ones...I broke my knock-off tool trying rivet mine. Local shop uses an air hammer to rivet. But the chain breaker thing is way cheaper, and most shops (around here at least) will put the perm. rivet on for free.

Grinded the rivets and hammer out the xtra links , worked out better than i thought ... My new chain has the clip and used a C clamp to tighten the chain, was a lil worried about the chain but she is holding up pretty well . Really opened it up lastnight , thanks for the input.
