Free; great ride you have there!!! I have a '95. As much as they weigh, some times I think they REALLY ARE a diesel truck......!
I would guess you probably need a valve adjustment, and to check the cam chain tensioner (like you mentioned.) Make sure you're using fresh gas, and clean the grunge outta the jets if it's been sitting very long; like Prom said^.

I'm gonna get punched in the face for this....
If the cam chain tensioner isn't working properly then the cam chain will not have the proper tension.
Sorry bro. The tensioner keeps pressure against the chain and keeps it from coming loose. If it doesnt work properly the chain will become loose and will flop around inside the case. This causes the rattling sound and 90% of the time it is harmless. However if the chain gets loose enough it can hit the sides of the case causing minor damage, or jump teeth causing the bike to run like monkey poo and possibly causing serious damage to the valves and pistons, or in extreme cases the chain could break causing extensive damage to the case, bent valves, damaged pistons, and possible damage to the head and cams.
People have run for years with the "Kawi Rattle" with no adverse effects, and yes it is a common problem, but it can be fixed with a little time and a little beer. Keep us posted.

wow, if the cam chain gets that loose prom, that is an issue for sure. But yes, the CCT is not the greatest and a loose (not proms loose) chain can and will affect starting issues. A bog at 2500rpm? I still think tune that gal. Check valves, readjust the CCT at the same time. (just that you have a good baseline to work from and will not have to touch it again for a long time) But in the end you may likely find that the carbs are just not cleaned and adjusted.
