Default Need Help! How to open the gas tank? My key doesn't work....

To wise ones,

I need some help on opening my 89 Kawasaki ZX7 750's Gas Tank. The lock won't open with the key and I tried many different method to open. Now my options are pop the gas tank lock holder (sorry I can not upload thr pictures) or take the whole tank to the locksmith and have it opened.

I got the gas tank lock holder loosened up after removing all the allen screws but it wouldn't come out and I do not wish to force open.

For those who has sport bike and had similar problems, please let me know whether I can use force to remove the gas tank lock holder or I should take the tank to the locksmith.

Thanks.

David

do you still have the key? there is a screw under the cap that won't allow it to come off just by taking out the hex bolts on top. if you still have the key, spray some wd40 in the key hole. I bet she opens right up

Have you tried pushing down on the cap and then turn the key? Takes the pressure off the latching mechanism.

I tried all kind of methods to open the gas tank:
1. WD 40 and the key - trying for a week
2. Push down the cap to open
3. Tried to pick the lock
4. Praying

i had the same problem. Leaving your bike out in the rain will do that. i was twisting my key all different ways. I finally got it open and took the entire thing apart lubed it up and it worked perfectly. then 2 days later i did it agian. so i just sprayed lube into the key hole and its worked ever since.

there is/should be one screw holding down the assembly only reachable by opening up the cap. I would call a locksmith and see what they charge to just open it. what kind of shape is the key in? does it still work on the rest of the bike? if the key still works and its expensive to just open the cap, make sure all the screws are tight, then either drill out the key hole or use a very large screwdriver and hammer. once you get the cap opened, remove the engine assembly and get a keyless cap. or watch ebay for a ignition/gas cap with key set. they are VERY expensive at the dealership for the set.
