Default I just bought a 636 ninja and have a question

i just bought an 05 636 ninja and I was wondering if anyone knew the answer to this question; I don't know much about bikes so any info would be great:
basically, when i turn the key to the 'on' position the speedometer activates and the lights turn on. At this point I hear a clicking sound under the seat that goes for a few seconds. tat-tat-tat-tat. This is prior to starting the engine.

is this sound normal? If not can anyone tell me whats wrong? thanks for the help

A relay should not chatter lemac. The fuel pump makes a noise though and sounds like a chatter on start up.

edit: But the pump is not under the seat either.

I know relays dont chatter, they click... The discription he gave made me beleive it was a relay click. Prior to start up. At least thats what mine does. I could be wrong though. Good luck with it and welcome to the forums.

The noise coming from under the seat is most likely the exhaust valve...if you have an aftermarket exhaust the noise is only worsend! not gonna hurt anything jsut annoying!

A moving exhaust valve without there being any power/movement in the engine? Now that would be neat.

I get a couple clicks from relays as well on my 9, and the fuel pump primes... and on the 9 it is under the tail end of the tank... the sound could appear to come from under the seat a bit if the 636 is located in the same place. I would say the clicks are normal, as they are activated in a sequence so as not to put max load on the batt and rest of the electrical system... kinda like a car.

On OD's when you kick the key on you hear the gas pump kick in under the gas tank area then you hear hear a couple of clicks under the seat. I should know I get to ride it more than he does now LOL

WELCOME to KF!!!

that sound is the exhaust valve servo motor and if you have a aftermarket pipe with the servo stop, the clack clack clack seems louder. go ride !
