Default gears gone

Hi im new to the forum and to biking. I have a zzr600 1994 and on my home yesterday the gears went . To explain the gear lever stays down and sits in 3rd or stays up and sits in 4th if i push it down slightly and up again it gets 5th but lever stays up still and the same shifting down . I can only get them 3 gears and no neutral any ideas?

Is the gear lever loose on the shaft?

I don't completely understand what's happening but from what I gather you can't get first second or nuteral right?

If so is your bike making alot of noise or running really hot. Also you say your new to riding have you driven a clutch before possible stripped them. Ive seen that happen. Other than that would need more info.

Might also try taking the shifter off and seeing if the shifter bar is bent or has anything in its way.

I have now idea then you might try liquid seafoam and add it to your oil instructions are on it might help free it up but like I say I've never heard of this before

What's the history on the bike? Did the prior owner drag race it? I'm guessing bent shifting fork due to stomping on the shifter. (edit: ....as in, stomping on the shifter at redline with the rear tire spinning.)

ok so for all you guys future reference my brother has stripped it down taken a look and basically there was some muck in the 'magic' positive neutral which he cleaned off and all works fine again so if any of you have this problem then its an easy if not time consuming job with just the cost of oil and gaskets. also doing the fuel, oil and air filters while its in a pile so all serviced up now as well
