clutch
i have a 2001 zx9r with 17000 miles. i am the 4th owner and i take good care of it but.....in 4th gear under hrd acceleration, the bike slipps and bounces of the red line. it happens only in 4th and between 7000 and 11000 rpm. other gears seem to be fine. is there an adjustment, or do i need a new clutch?
Mine was doing this andit turned out thatall I needed was new springs. I replaced the entire clutch setup, but when I measured the old discs, they were all within spec...meaning new springs probably would've cured the slipping.
You'd pretty much need to remove the old clutch parts to determine if you just need new springs, or new everything. Considering how easy mine was to replace, I'm glad I went ahead and did it all. If you're looking to save some money, take the discs out, visually inspect them for burning and measure them for wear. If they're ok, just put in new springs. If money isn't an issue, replace discs (metal AND fiber) and springs.

hmm, I am for some reason thinking springs as well acting as a slipper clutch. The "only in 4th between 7k-11k rpm" is why I am leaning towards this. Checking your steels and fibers is also a good thing to know when you read them.
