clueless!!!!
No i have not gotten the part no. yet, but now i am 100% sure that it is the cdi , just popped the case off the cdi and it is toasted there is a couple different components insidethat are krispy. why!!! if i replace it is it going to happen all over, im not great with electronics like WH so i guess all i can do is try it. im thinking that maybe it has something to do with the regulator that is spliced in. do you think maybe the old regulatorwas the cause? or the new one maybe?
man, for some reason, bike (electrical) components are insanely weak when it comes to abuse or overloads. i did a reg and stator job on an '02 R6, and all that happened is a wire got pinched briefly while the owner was putting the nose back on after puttin some strobe lights or somethin in.
it doesn't take much!
sounds like you have a cdi thats not epoxy encapsulated! wow...
usually, those things are filled with a high temp plastic and stuff at the factory to keep ppl for servicing them. you can probably get all the replacement parts at radioshack if you wanted to..
new is always the best answer for that kinda stuff, unless you're really into electronics and such.
my advice would be at this point.. trace every wire that hooks up to, or in some way deals with your cdi, and ensure 1. the integrity of the conection and 2. the correct termination point.
when i get a chance to look at the online manual, i will do it.. maybe i can give you an estimate on what to meter and what resistance values you'll be looking for. i'm crazy sick and feel like i got wheelied all over..i'll do that tomorrow night, actually. (not wheelies, lol)

i guess im going to check the rest of the harness for anything obvious and hope that the reg is ok and replace the cdi , i am already having nightmares about toasting a new unit. iguess i ama little negative but i always expect the worst and hope for the best. but i cant expect to much right now im only out 160.00
