Default Carb/choke issues

OK after several electrical issues and an exhaust issue I have managed to get my 1985 KLR250 started. The guy I bough it from said it was sitting for around 20 years so I am thrilled to have revived it. It seems to be running allright but I have 2 remaining issues.

1.) The bike starts on 2-3 kicks with the choke fully open but if I close the choke more than half way it dies. Could this be something I could fix by adjusting the mixture screw? Carbs have always been hard for me.

2.) When I first rebuilt the carb gas would just pour out of the overflow. I adjusted the float level which required me to push the tang almost all the way in and then measured with a dial caliper and it was within spec. It now holds gas and does not overflow unless I have been running it. It does not leak while it is running but after turing it off gas drips from the overflow for a few minutes and then stops. Is this normal or do I need to adjust the floats again? I dont think I can push the tang in any more.

also is it possible that these issues are somehow related?

Thanks in advance for an help you can provide me, I am anxious to get this old girl on the road!

I'll start with the stupid question, how long are you waiting before you close the choke? If its not ready it wont work. Now that thats covered, I assume you have already cleaned the carb? Have you ridden the bike? Might take a while to blow 20 years of gunk out. I'd give it some time to see if it clears up before messing with the mixture. Make sure you have fresh gas and that the fuel filter, air filter, and jets are clean then bring up that RPMs for 10 minutes or so and see if anything changes. If not your gonna have to go back in the carb.

Fuel leaks are not normal. You might need to replace the float needles, and you can probably replace the float while your there, doesnt cost much.

Grats on the revive, get some pics up! Welcome to KF!

But you did not install new needles/seats for the carb? And did you check to see if the float had a pin hole in it? They do tend to leak after some time it seems where they fuel log and continue to pour fuel.

OK I just took it around the block several dozen times, I was actually concerned that it was getting too hot, but that is a question for later. So when I got back in my driveway and the temp was all the way to the red I closed the choke and it stalled. I guess the easy solution in this case is not the right one unfortunately. All my filters are brand new as well so I am back to squre one.

I am happy to report that this time around there was no gas leak. I'm not sure why that is but I am not complaining. I did check the floats for leaks upon rebuilding, and I also replaced the float valve, but not the seat. I could not find the float valve seat listed or pictured on any of the web sites, and it seems imposible to find them anywhere on line. If you know where I could pick one up or what others might be compatible with the CVK34 I will gladly purchase one because it did look a little worn.

Thanks for the help and I will post pictures once I put the side covers back on which will be when I am done tinkering with this carb!

Check the cooling system for air, sometimes a bubble on the sensor can cause a false indication, you can also test your thermostat for proper operation, check your mix to make sure its appicable for the temps your running, and make sure the fan is working properly.
