Default Backfiring

More recently I have noticed my bike backfiring a lot. It will pop when I am riding the gears slowing down to a stop, and it will pop a lot of times when I shift gears. I tend to only hit 7k or 8k on the rpm so I'm not romping it or anything...is the obvious place to start timing? It also seems like my idle speed jumps around a lot. I know with the yoshimura cams that are in it, it wants to idle around 900 or 1000 naturally, but sometimes it will jump up to 1500 and chill there for no reason. Maybe related?

Look for an air leak in the induction tract. Timing next. Some backfiring is probably unavoidable with your cams.

check the timing, your bike should idle at 1100 rpm cold, 1300 rpm warm also you can do the KLEEN mod and this will elimanate some of that poping sound you hear but my 04 does the same thing & its been dyno tune

what is the kleen mod and airbox mod you are talkin about? I've never heard of it...but there is no way I will pass up an opportunity to play with the bike some more. Also, I have a shop manual that I can use to figure out how to play with the timing, and I have definitely done it on a car, but are there any other tips that I might want to know?

its where you take the smog crap off your bike & caping the vent ports on the throttle bodies & airbox do a search its plenty of write ups on how to do it, also the airbox mod consist of taking the little black dirvertor out in the middle inside the airbox, once you remove it you will need to plug the 2 holes back up with something
