Default 92 ex500 not starting

i built this from ground up with all the pieces separate. i did have a reference bike. the wiring harness is hooked up except for the things like headlights and that ****. the ici is hooked up as well as the voltage reg. theres 2 wires coming out of the crank case. but since i got the engine off of an ex race bike, one of the wires cannot plug into the harness where it should. the carbs are not gummed, and the engine has good compression. there is smoke coming out the tail pipes. why isnt my engine starting? are the spark plugs not firing? and if so why arent they?

Not sure exactly. What color of wire and where is it located? If the wire was cut for a race bike, then it is most likely lighting, sidestand, clutch, ignition related I would think. did you hit up your manual on this yet?
