Default 83 kz550 c4 ltd valves

Okay this will sound stupid lol but..

I had a blown head gasket. Changed that got top end back together timing set blah blah blah.

So before I went to put the valve cover back on I decided wisely I would check my valve clearances.

Now here's the problem. There shimmed and I've never had to mess with them before so I break out the manual for help but I don't clearly understand how to check the clearance I have the appropriate tools. Filler gauges I mean. But I don't know the specifics on measuring I need help!

Book says turn crank to '1•4' T and measure 1 and 3 inlet or 2 and 4 exhaust then turn to '2•3' T and measure 2 and 4 inlet or 1 and 3 exhaust....

Here's where it gets me the picture the Haynes manual shows me on where to measure shows the lobes away from the buckets or pots whatever you want to call them. But say I set it to '1•4' T. 1's love will be facing away and 3's will be straight up. Same with the rest so I go to measure well on 1 the gap is so small my .0015 in. Won't fit between them and the proper specs should be between .004-.008 and the same thing on 3 can't get my thinnest filler gauge under it.

I don't understand and I hope I've supplied enough information.
Let me know either what I've done wrong " timings off (doubt it) or whatever" and/or what I'm currently doing wrong

Thanks all

Ok well thanks for the quick post lol.

And turns out it doesn't matter if where the lobes are as long as they aren't touching the valve seats. And as it turns out if you can't fit a filler gauge between the cam and valve seat you have to get a smaller shim and use it that way you have a starting point
