Default Helmet Talk...

So, I'm personally already decided I want a full face helmet (duh..) BUT here's my question to you... I'm reading about the different types of shells- which is best- polycarbonate, tri composite, or Fiberglass? and why? I read that helmet study by Motorcycle Magazine, and they're saying that plastic is actually better because it has more give. Working with TBI patients, I could see that, but I'd rather poll the community. What do you think? What do you use and why?
Thanks in advance!

i dont know about the materials, but SHOEI seems to be a popular brand, hand made in japan, i have one, (rf-1000) and i am very happy with the fit of it, they also have replaceable pads that you can almost custom fit to your head. Comfort is probably the main thing you should look for in in a helmet, because the helmet might not crack and your head will be in perfect shape but your brain can only handle so much inside your head during a hit.

the testing has shown that with snell/dot standards the plastic ones giving more protect you from being a vegetable better than the hard composite shells.

they have the added benefit of being cheaper

I always used to go for fibreglass, or sometimes carbon, but for the last 15 years I've been persuaded that polycarb is better. Downside is that it's easily degraded by contact with solvents, so don't paint it and avoid extra stickers.

It's the liner that provides the shock absorption. In general, I'd say go for the helmet with the best fit. After fit, the secondary consideration is ventilation.

ventelation is key - if its stuffy inside you won't want to wear it.

I've been riding with an AFX fx-30 for the last 2 years and this winter i was looking for a new lense for it - turns out that they make a winterizing kit for it for snomobile riders, gives it a double lens (think insulated window) to prevent fogging, a nose breathe guard that actually works, and a chin deflector to reduce cold air coming up infront of your mount and nose. 40* mornings no longer result in a cold face without a scarf or balaclava

My last 5 helmets have been fiberglass and the last 4 had Snell ratings. Ventilation is very important, especially in Texas. But with the extra ventilation, there is more noise. But in warm climates, I would go with ventilation and just wear ear plugs.

fiberglass, but at times fiberglass can be heavy. Look into carbon fiber if you budget can handle it. I just came across the Xpeed XCF3000 for around 350.00 at www.XpeedOutlet.com

Heavier than my last helmet, just a bit.
Wow.. its tight. Could be that new helmet feeling.
build quality... everything looks and works great, but the one upper vent is very loose in adjustment. Time will tell on that one.
