wiring a relay and switch for aux running lights
hey all.........i know how to run wiring and do a switch....has any one ever used a relay on some aux/ fog lights and where did you pic up power from (battery?) --should the switch go on the neg side...any help would be great! thanks in advance...ps i burnt up my wiring to the 55 watt fogs lamps as there is too much draw with out a relay some where in there,.....just need to know how to wire the relay--- it has 4 terminals........kawa' 550 ltd 81'....40 k miles....bless her heart...she's running every day!!!!!!!!!!! still!
I would add a dedicated fuse for the fog lamps to your switch. Not sure if you would need a relay for that although you could tie one into the circuit if you wanted. Battery, fuse, your rated switch, lamps, ground wire is how I am picturing this.
Running a relay would put alot more wires in the way, if you can get around it I would. You will need to increase the gauge on the wires to handle the lamps and get a switch that will handle the draw, and yes a fuse is a very good idea. If you have to use a relay your local auto parts place sells relay kits for offroad lights that will take care of it.
thanks all!. i've got this all into my bike and for the most part wire up,..............just having a few questions as to where goes this last wire to get powered up---------.i do have heavy guage wiring on the power side going into the relay, after the relay there is less amp draw so you can use regular duty wiring no problem---- i understand this part-------..i've got the relay to the batt(wire 1) and ground(wire 2)...now, one wire says it goes to"aux" meaning my fog lamps of course(wire 3) ( that i will put in line with a fused switch) ---- the other wire from the relay says it goes to a switch(Wire 4)----this i am confused on.....i dont get this connection,,,i have wired a similiar project to my truck...fogs lamps, relay, fuse, switch and even a cool neon indicator lamp that shows when my fogs lamps are burning when i hit the floor switch...but the relay was a different configuration {5 wires} and it took the rest of my brain cells i guess to get er done that time....thanks in advance for any helpers out there___________ i love my bike!...she's old, a little battle scarred, but still my best friend...(and my dog)...
If I am understanding you properly you put a switch between the relay and the fog lights, in which case your doing it wrong. The relay is simply a switch to turn a high power unit on and off, you then must activate the relay using a separate switch so you must make 2 different circuts.
Using your diagram you must make the first circut by going from a power source to the switch then to relay connection #1 then relay connection #2 to ground. This will turn the relay on and off.
The second circut will go battery then fuse then relay connection #3 then from relay connection #5 (what happened to 4?) to your fog lights then to ground. This entire circut must be made with heavy gauge wire, you can not use a smaller gauge after the relay.
The purpose of this is to activate a high power device using a low power circut, good luck!
