Default Pipes Glowing

Hi, I have a 97 1500 Vulcan Classic. I started the bike up yesterday while it was still in the trailer. I hadn't started it for about a week. I have a couple of things going on at this point. #1 is the choke keeps pulling back in on it's own with in a couple of seconds of pulling it out and #2 I noticed after about 3 minutes of warming the bike at about 1500 rpm the pipes under the heat shield are glowing red hot. Any Ideas as to what may be happening?

Kik

Well I originally posted this message in Oct and I haven't gotten anyone to even give a reply. I guess people on this sight must not work on they're own bike. Thanks anyway.

Sounds like it's running too lean. Oh and how about an introduction before you stat giving us a hard time for not responding. But seriously sorry for not seeing this one, sometimes if a post is not answered in the first day, it quickly gets buried. Thanks for stopping by.

actually, sorry to correct, but a rich condition will cause pipe glowing.. you're getting fuel in the pipe and its burning there.

lean conditions ARE incredibly hot as well, so i will absolutely not rule that out.. lean is mean, as they say. (love ya deej!! )

BUT, at the same time, exhaust temps are about 1800*F, so at idle, with no air flow, the pipe is bound to heat and retain that heat.

you can always reset the mixture screws and if you can get your hands on a wideband O2 sensor, map out what your A/F is and adjust from there.

good luck, welcome to KF, and hopefully you didn't "quit" us..

Whitehendrix, You're absoluely correct. It's a rich condition and the fuel is building in the front pipe. Also the the slow idle jet was plugged and it was creating a vacuum in the carb to the point of pulling the choke in and not letting the back cyl fire correctly because it was getting too much air.

I stand corrected Wow, it was bound to happen some day. I knew that the day would come when I was wrong.

People think that a glowing exhaust pipe means lean, when it is almost always a rich condition or a timing issue...Just really thinking about it, if your so lean that a steel pipe is glowing red, your aluminum piston would be a melted down mess..
