Quite a bit different from a lazer. And the intent is not weaponry, but a huge physics experiment to prove theories that have been around for years.
They are basically looking for the God particle which in theory caused atomic molecules to bond together in a fashion that is condusive to the beginning of biological life forms.

Thanks, Worlok14. . . . I was wondering whether or not SOMEONE actually knew what the hell he is talking about! Cosmologists are trying to find what caused the Big Bang, why did energy/matter come together to form stars/galaxies, the other structures of the known Universe, and especially, to unite Quantum Mechanics (the world of sub-atomic particles) with Einstein's theories. . . Special and General Relativity. This is the world of mathematics and theories that cosmologists and particle physicists inhabit and it's expected that the Large Hadron Collider will help prove some of those theroies. . . . very exciting stuff!
