Somebody stated that the collider is a laser, but that is far from the truth. Lasers generate a concentrated beam of light, but the collider sends atomic particles around the collider tube at the speed of light while keeping them on a perfect collision course using high powered magnetic coils.
Quite a bit different from a lazer. And the intent is not weaponry, but a huge physics experiment to prove theories that have been around for years.
They are basically looking for the God particle which in theory caused atomic molecules to bond together in a fashion that is condusive to the beginning of biological life forms.
