I bought it for taking product photos, that's how I justified it - it will eventually pay for itself. So I got the camera, a small infinity table, and some lighting.
But I plan to use it for hobby stuff as well. I'd like to get some good track photos - MX, hare scrambles, that sort of thing. One of the things that sold me on this camera was its durability and dust and water resistance. I figured it would hold up better outdoors. I looked closely at the D90, too. I had to really pry myself away from it, that looks like a really great camera, too. I like that the D90 does HD video, but I was concerned that it might not be as durable for the dusty conditions at the MX and outdoor off-road courses.
It's definitely a serious piece of hardware.

also make sure to keep yours sensor dust free, and NEVER change your lenses with the camera turned on...
I have had a few nikons, i still have some of my old film ones, a n6006 (my first), a N90, and the most expensive film one i own, an F100, all solid, incredible cameras., i even dropped the n6006 and it still works like new
