Legal Advice

RE: Legal Advice
I just recently got a ticket here in NC for 59 in a 45 - 14 miles over. I know the laws vary from state to state, but from what I gather the city doesn't really care what the charge gets plead down to, as long as they get their money. What you DO NOT want is that big speeding charge on your record because your insurance will go through the roof. Here in NC 1 insurance point is like 25 % increase, 2 points 45%, and it goes up exponentially from there. So the standard drill here is to plea it down to 9 or 10 miles over if possible which is the fewest points. After I got my ticket, I got about a dozen letters in the mail from lawyers offering to fix it for me.
For me is was worth it to just do the lawyer route as they will show up in court for you so you don't have to take off work and wait in line at the courthouse. They said that with my driving record it will be very easy to plea it down. As long as you don't have any other driving convictions within three years it should be easy. For me I haven't had a ticket in 17 years so I think I'm OK in that regard.
Just paying the ticket is an admission of guilt and an automatic conviction and that is usually NOT the best course of action. You can almost always get the charge down to some lesser offense. With the 32 over in your case, I would at least call a traffic lawyer and ask them what they thought about it. It won't cost you anything to ask and you can decide after talking to one or a few as to whether it might be good to get some legal help. For me, the legal fees were well worth it to not have to go down to the courthouse and wait for a turn in the first come first served queue from 9am to 3pm or something like that. I'll pay the $90 and let the experts handle it for me. And now I'm ultra-paranoid about going even a few miles over.
Good luck!

RE: Legal Advice
i just relized it was over 30mph you were going. That is an automatic court date. You better make sure you dint get a wreckless driving charge instead of a simple speeding ticket.

RE: Legal Advice
Yeah, that's pretty fast to not have gotten a reckless driving charge. I got a few of those in '03-'04, but that was in VA. One of them, I was doing 27 over, and he tagged me with reckless. One of them, I got clocked at 100 in a 55. He wrote me up for reckless, but then the trooper never showed up in court (I got lucky). The other one was a hick cop who wrote me a reckless driving ticket for fishtailing while leaving a parking lot.... in a front wheel drive car!
Definately at least call a lawyer and get some advice. It will never hurt.
