Default idling a bike

hi i am buying an older bike i belive its a 99..nd its a rm250..
the guy that i am buying the bike from told me that the bike wont idle and he said because most older bikes dont idle.. is this true??

After the initial combustion occurs from starting the engine any engine regardless of age or build will idle when gas is not being injected into the system. So, the guy is BS'ing you and trying to sell you a bike that doesnt work.

Probably just a carb adjustment. It's not uncommon for MX'ers to adjust the smokers so you need to keep blipping to keep them running. That's not to say it cannot. Just 2-stroke can foul a plug if left to idle too long, so it's common to adjust so that they can't, or just barely do.

more important..... does it start ok?
does it pull strong?
might need a top end rebuild but thats easy and not too $$$
how much is he asking? could be a "steal" need more INFO!

Turn the idle screw out counter clockwise 1/2 turn. If it idles better, that's all it is. I would worry more about the transmission, clutch, and front end more than just an idling problem. If that is the only thing wrong with the bike, it's a cheap fix. But like Wedge said, as long as it pulls strong, then the top end is probably OK. Of course, it needs to shift smoothly, no clutch slip, no oil leaking from the forks, and fires up easily. Some times a little problem like an idling problem can work to your advantage pricewise.

im paying 1100 for the bike its an rm250.. im getting it tomorrow morning lol so excited to get on my first 2 stroke..
but the bike starts on first kick.. runs and sounds good.. if it kicks good tomorrow and sounds good and starts up on the first kick im going to buy the bike the guy said that the bike has been takin care of.. and he owns a racing store so i have a feeling im just getting a good deal i was just worrying about it to make sure its not an issue.. any tips for when i get the bike and how i should look at it and what to look at ??
