One of the true mysteries of the universe. People always say they want to hear the truth, but when you tell them the truth, they respond in a negative way or think you're being crass. This is just one example (of many) which makes the option for people to lie and cheat, lead to a seemingly more positive outcome.
Sorry for the Psych 101 lecture, but I didn't laugh at the story^ because it reminds me of me. Say what you mean; if you don't want the truth, don't ask for it. Yes, I was in the principal's office a few times.....
