don't worry about keeping it under 4K too much - just make sure you don't sit at an RPM for too long - vary it up and down some even onthe highway. the pressure and vacuum on the piston rings is essential to make them seat properly but sitting at a set rpm too long can glaze / polish the cylinder walls which is bad for oiling and will cause it to burn oil in the long run.

Congrats on the first ride, Like was mentioned above, yea it gets hot and sweaty, but there is nothing like that power between your legs, and the feeling of riding for the first time, the thrill of the experience, the unknown, the pure joy and ecstasy of it all...............................wait we are still talking about motorcycles right?
