I would not have an issue with the fix it stuff then. But being hounded by the local poo poo seems like a never ending story for that locale.

You are missing the point - and your justification is a cop-out to be honest. It has less to do with the volume of traffic on the road, and more with the quality of driver, rider, and they TYPE of riding and driving that happens there. Interstate 90 between O'Hare airport and downtown Chicago sees more cars in ONE DAY than The Gap sees in a month - and while there is a daily accident or three there - an extremely limited number of them result in people going for a trip in the red and white box with the blinky lights.

The facts are this - there are way too many people riding that road at too high of a rate of speed who think that they are smarter than the machine they are riding, smarter than the road they are riding on, and smarter than the other people who are also riding or driving on the road. Flying through blind turns which have intersections at their apexes is not the smartest thing in the world to do. Nor is passing another car or bike on the wrong side of the ride, across a double-yellow on an EXTREMELY blind curve to the left. Yet video after video posted on youtube, and accident after accident all have the exact same circumstances...

Someone goes there who thinks they are God's Gift To Riding - and they get their *** handed to them on the 3rd or 4th pass, which they just happened to take a bit hotter than the ones before and therefor didn't have anywhere near enough reaction time when a car pulled out on said blind apex with an intersection, or when they or someone coming towards them is on the wrong side of the road. It is one thing to go and "have fun" and tear it up a little, it is another thing to push too far and be stupid by dramatically slicing your reaction time and distance because you pushed beyond your means, abilities, and what would be reasonable. The difference is that stupid hurts. People seem to get it into their heads that the gap is a closed circuit, and that the only thing they need to worry about is if the bike slides out from underneath them and how to avoid sliding into the trees.

It is dangerous for the people who do go there just to cruise it - because they get traffic stacked up behind them and end up getting passed on both the left AND the right, usually in sections that don't warrant any passing at all... I know that if I were to go there, I would not have to worry about wrecking because I crossed the double yellow, or because I ride beyond my means and abilities... however - everyone else there is the wildcard, and their idiocy puts you far more at risk. I know 3 people around Chicago who just in the last year went there and wrecked.... not including those from this forum. One went down because an on-coming bike went wide trying to pass another bike, crossed the double yellow and clipped her - she ended up with a broken collar bone. Another who was with her went to go get help - and had a car pull out of a grocery store right in front of him - he T-boned her. He is still learning how to walk again. The 3rd went wide around a right-hander and his front tire clipped the left front of the oncoming truck...

If they don't crack down on the type of riding that is happening there, this will continue to happen, and more people will continue to get seriously messed up or killed. There is no reason why it has to go to that extreme... you can still have fun and tear it up without putting yourself and all the other people around you in danger because you are being a dumbass. Slow it down a notch, space it out, don't pass... you can still have a hell of a lot of fun, and you won't come home in a cast or with a new stunt bike.

Fun... not stupid. Stupid hurts.
You are so right! It's the SQUIDS that screw it up for the responsible experienced capableriders. There are experienced capable riders that aren't responsible too so they also are SQUIDS! They think that they are Rossi or Hayden" and will show-off to look good. If you or they want to do that, go to the track and do trackdayswhere it's A WHOLE LOT MORE FUN & SAFER to do. No oncoming cars, gravel, sand, oil, animals running out in front or Semi Trailers blockingyou whole lane. You get to count on a consistent track surface and work on your skills as a rider and find the handling & traction chracterstics of your bike. Plus you are prapared for a crash with full leathers, Helmet, boots, gloves & backbrace etc. There is emergency careif needed onsite. It's a relaxing and enjoyable experience where you can concentrate on just riding or dicing with the other riders. NO COPS to worry about! You get all day to ride if you want to and meet really great people. Riding schools are available if you want to improve your skills too.

Weused to go and ride Hwy 35 & Hwy 9 almost every weekend when I lived in northern California. We were going pretty fast through there and it got to be pretty dangerous. I saw cars in my oncoming lanea few times, ran off the road a couple, and crashed once. Saw a couple of riders die and many get hurt.It got to a point where I was worried if I would come back homein an ambulance or a bodybag. Just like the GAP, the cops were in full force there also. Too many complaints from motorists & residents about the speeding & crashes. Also the Paramedics were working overtime and they weren't able to supply their services to seriously injured from attending to SQUIDS.

So I decided to take my act to the track. I was scared at first that I wouldn't be fast enough on the racetrack so I took the California Superbike School at Laguna. I was hooked! I started racing in the AFM &quit riding on the street for 5 years because it wasn't fun or safe to go as fast on the street. Don't get me wrong; I love riding thetwisty roads& highwaysand enjoy the scenery but I don't do it all out like I used to. I leave the knee dragging for the track. My wife and I just gotback from riding Hwy 23 in Arkansas 3 weeks ago and it was incredible. Beautiful twisty scenic roads. Saw some bikes on it; cruisers and sportbikes. Couple of the sportbikers getting a little Squiddytrying to drag knees with jeans on.Saw theCOPSa couple of times too.

My suggestion is to take a trackday riding school or even just do a couple of trackdays and you will automatically stop doing crazy dangerousstuff on the streets. A trackday will cost you about $100 to $200 depending on the track for a full day of riding. Get you aggressions out and your adrenaline up on the racetrack then go and enjoy the roads and scenery of your favorite riding road. Let the squids pass you and crash up ahead.

Here's a list of schools and trackday organizations in the country. Try it; you'll love it!

I personally can't wait to do a track day. I also would love to go to a school. I see your point and understand it. In this country there are roads that have beautiful scenary and run along rivers or mountains and its just nice to ride those roads via car or motorcycle. Deals Gap happens to be a road that many people like to go do. I have a patient of mine at my work that two times a year he likes to take his wife down to the gap and spend about a half of a week down there. He is retired and rides a Harley Road King. He went down with his wife and his best friend with his spouse. He got cut off by a cop down there then the cop pulled over got behind him and tailed him hard and then pulled him over for not allowing enough space. The man has had two knee replacements and just had his left hip replaced all he wants to do is ride with his wife and best friend and enjoy his time down there and he gets harassed. Yes the morons that race down there are not smart. I agree take that to the track, but for those who like to enjoy the area and ride with safety and common sense they shouldn't be harassed by the cops. They guy hasn't had a ticket in 40 years and a cop put his life in danger and then gave him a ticket for it. I can understand them putting all those cops down there to prevent stupidity but to start harassing is just uncalled for.

Well, I just got back from the Gap. Went up Friday and came back this afternoon in the cage. We had lunch at the CROT (Crossroads of Time. This is the store at the base of Deals Gap) cafe and talked to a few friends. Sport bikes were scarce, but there was no shortage of cruisers at all. Ben (manager of the CROT) told me that business has not dropped off at all, but the cruisers are more abundant. We then drove the Gap with a video camera going and saw no less that 7 police cars shooting radar. Only one had anyone pulled over and it was two cruisers. We then drove the Cherohola Skyway and did not see a single Ranger or Highway Patrol there.

My buddies just went to some of the other roads we know about that no one else knows and no cops patrol......
