Had a mech look at the zx9 I just got. He said it was jetted all together wrong for bottom end. He's changing the jet to make it more what I want. We'll see how it does over the next couple months as I get more used to it. I also found out that because the VFR is a V engine not an inline that it will have more bottom end naturally than the inlines of the same size. Less rotating weight. Transfers to greater low end torque and faster acceleration. Put a Muzzy exaust on the VFR and it still sounds quiet compared to the zx9 with the same exaust though. You mentioned draining the bowls if it sit for a month or so, I live in Florida, there isn't much time you can't ride. A couple weeks here and there if you don't ride in the rain, but I don't care if I get wet as long as I'm riding.

Extreem, congrats on the zx9! What does your mech mean when he says "jetted wrong for the bottom end?" I'd be careful twiddling with jets if it runs smooth, now. If you're looking for grunt off the line, change your sprockets.
V's of the same displacement also have bigger pistons (cuz there's only 2.) More bang per stroke = more torque.

What he was basicly saying is that it's dumping more fuel than it needs to build power at the lower end, over loading it. It made it run rough at lower speeds. And as for the VFR and it's V engine, it still has four cylinders, they are in a V instead of inline, making less rotating weight. Thus more bottom end torque.

Right on extreemdriver1. By chance, what is a VFR putting out for torque in the 0-7k range anyways?

i got my 1998 zx9r for my first bike 3 weeks ago. i have put about 1500 miles on it easy now. it was in the shop for a week and a half getting a wheel bearing also haha. i ride alot all over. its my daily driver cus my jeep is broken from offroading it pretty hard. this is my first bike, and i love it. picked it up pretty cheap, has been repainted, and seems pretty straight. its got a full muzzy exhaust, and just some cosmetic stuff. i plan to do a stage 1-3 jet kit, and +4 timing adjuster, then a -1,+2 sprocket set. i live in phoenix az if anyone wants to ride. i just moved here from st. louis a month ago.
