New guy, couple of questions about a zx6
I have been wanting a street bike for awhile and I won one on ebay just a couple of hours ago and I still have to pick it up. But it is a 93 zx600e, I am pretty mechanically inclined as far as this stuff usually goes but i was wondering about common problems this generation of bikes usually has. The one I got is kinda rough as far as the cosmetic aspect because it is going to be my first bike to learn on so I am not really worried about that. It needs a couple of pieces of plastic replaced and probably a paint job and seat cover, it also has a micron 4 to 1 exhaust. The guy said on the phone that he replaced the motor because it was stuck in first and he had some guy take the original motor apart and he said something was stuck and he fixed it and it shifts fine now (not in the bike) but the other motor that is in it was put in professionally and it sometimes slips out of second gear when you get on it really hard he said. I dont think this is really too big a deal because I get the bike with motor and the spare motor (original) and like 2 of the fairings it was missing. All for the low price of $500 and a 6 hour road trip to pick it up then 6 more hours back. What do you guys think?
Welcome to the forum. Sound like a good deal and a good bike to start and learn on. Check ebay for parts you need or the classified section here.
Thanks man, I figured I would throw up the ebay pic of what I am working with here. Don't mind the ugly paint that is going to be done away shortly after I pick it up.
He replaced the motor because it was stuck in first...? It sounds like this guy doesn't know the first thing about bikes but you might get lucky.
First thing to do is to drain and replace any gas, oil, brake fluid, etc... in the bike and hit every grease point you can with a grease gun. My first bike was a 91 ZX-6 and it was a great bike, very comfortable and still could get to 130+mph when needed.

He didn't really sound like he knew too much about it, but apparently he had someone fix it and it shifts now, so I may end up swappin that motor back in. I have heard the second gear in these bikes is a common problem, do you guys have any more info on this? As far as the fluids, I am going to definatly change the oil, oil filter, drain the tank (although he said he had it running last month) and check the break fluid. I will probably take it all apart and clean it up and grease it before I ever ride it
Welcome to the forums. The best bikes come in a box!
It sounds like you could sell the parts and easily get your money out of it, if you needed to. I'd say you got a deal.
Get it running, see what you've got (not some anecdotal, third hand info) and let us know. We'll get you out on the road.

If it's running good & smooth, just put in some fresh gas and RXP. Check and/or Change the rest of the fluids. Check and adjust your tire pressures & chain (Lube it too).
