I actually did a project on this subject (using my 636) while in engineering school. It turns out that most modern sportbikes come from the factory with a very lean (but safe stock) setting. When you increase the air flow (exhaust or filter) the mixture becomes more lean. An easy way too see if you are running more lean is that your bike will run warmer than usual. Anyways there was a neglible hp loss at the wheel with just the k&n installed (Ya we have a dynamometer at my school). With a Power Commander using a map from their website for the two brothers exhaust the horsepower was noticable (about .4% increase) with the k&n.

Im going to have to disagree with you on this Tomian, from my expierence and what i have learned modern day sport bikes actually come with a rich A/F Mixture, one of the many reasons is for emission control, or that could just be for the sport bikes here in california. On my 05 ZX6RR my mixture was so rich, you could see flames comeing out my exhuast at night, this being backfire from all the unburned fuel in the cylinder housing. There for i had my ECU re mapped and tuned to all the mods i have added on. So i disagree on sport bikes being lean ....

You must be an exception, I say this because Kawasaki's have a history of coming from the factory a little lean. Hence you hear stories of glowing headers and discoloring of pipes... Which is why it is important to get a power commander if you are going to add an aftermarket filter and pipe... Just a pipe you can get away with no PCM, but add both and it is crucial to get one...

Guys, Does anyone know where to go in southern california to get a custom map (tuning) done? I like to get on the dyno too.
I have the parts but i've been waiting to put them on until I find somewhere reputable to get my bike tuned.
