Default how to do an OIL change?

Ok dont flame me about not searching, I at least looked in DIY, wasnt there. Since I havent been on in like a year figured some of you guys that are always on wouldnt mind writing back and Im really bored at school!

Ok so I have a 2004 636. I changed the oil 1x but i basically watched my friend do it, and it was a while ago. I just want to make sure I have all things covered.

I went to the store today and bought 5 quarts of half synthetic half mineral (what i put in last time). It just dawned on me that I need a new oil filter right? or wrong?

This is how I am picturing doin it, but I have blank spots in between prolly.
1) take off all the fareings
2)then start up bike for 30 seconds, then turn off and unscrew the bolt with the proper size fitting
3) then take out oil filter and let it all drain into pan. move the bike side to side for a minute. let drain for an hr?
4) then pour oil in old or is it new filter, then put it back in, then put the rest of oil in the bike. when do i know its full?
5) put oil into gallon jug and pour all over my noisy neighbors front step. (j/k)
6) put fareings back on when i decide not to be lazy

Am I misssing something or am I just 50% wrong. thanx

P.S. i saw the new zx-10, holy orgasim, it was lime green with the undertail, im in love again with kawas! They did it right!!!!

You’re on the right track this will help though;

use a rear stand, or sub with two jack stands to get the bike level side to side.

warm up the bike not just 30 seconds. Becarefull not to burn yourself with hot oil.

do not put old oil in new filter, bad. Put a little new oil on your finger and coat the O-ring on the new filter with oil.

fill bike to lower part of sight glass and run bike, do not forget to put the filter on lol.

warm up and shut off, let sit 10 minuets and check sight glass. Oil level should be in about the middle to 2/3 mark. Add if necessary.

Hope this helps, maintenance is easy and can be fun if you enjoy a little wrenching and besides it feels good to do it yourself and f-the stealership!

so i throw the old filter away right? See I was confused cause I just got back from the dealer and he didnt say anything about a filter, jerk, could of saved me some time. Now I gotta go back and buy a stupid filter. Id rather them change it cause im crunched for time., But there is no oil left in it and all I can do is top it off, then drive it over there, but Id have to buy new oil all over again.

So when I pull out the filter, the oil should already be drained? ? Then I let it drain for an hr. Then pour some new oil in the filter and coat the ring with oil so it slids in?

Anything else im over-looking?

theres no reason to let it drain for a hour. I usually let mine drain for about 1 min maybe 5 if im doing something else. i personally just coat the ring with new oil, put it on then fill her up. Start it up, let it warm up, turn off....wait a couple min...check oil level

Yes toss the old filter if it is a disposable one. Keep it only if it is a permanent filter like a Scotts, then it needs to be disassembled and cleaned. No need to fill it with oil when installing back on bike, just oil the O-ring. The old filter will still have some oil in it even after the bike has drained. Just keep the pan under it and dump it in there.

I agree with the time from others about 15 -20 mins. Maybe your first time 45 mins but that includes the test ride.

Good luck.

BTW I liked the dump old oil on pain in the ars neighbors porch
