Default gas select and fuel overflow in carbs

ok i was under the impression that a propperly operating carb float is designed to shut off the flow of fuel into the bowl.

well i walked out to the bike this morning after a couple days of it sitting and there was a wet spot on the ground. checked it out and the bike reaked of gas, opened the oil cap and the oil reaked of gas.

I drained the oil imediately and refilled with fresh. I slowly turned the engine to empty out the cylinders.

so i figured that turning the fuel valve to off would stop the flow. nope the rubber surface has a tear and it flows enough to run in the off position (ordered a rebuild kit for it, and clamped off the hose for now)

so the question is.. aren't the carbs supposed to stop the flow of fuel? if so, then damn that sucks.

Yes they are supposed to stop once the float bowls are full, but since you had a cracked diaphragm, some debris from the tank could have bypassed the petcock &gotten stuck in the float valve seat holding it open. The fuel valve (petcock) usually operates under vacuum so even if the float valve was stuck open, you didn't know it until the diaphragm failed/ cracked. The bike may have been running a little rough because of that.

With the Petcock and the Diaphragm leaking, it a wonder you didn't get anyone pregnant! LOL.

well debris should theoreticly have been stopped at the fuel filter. but you never know.
i guess i'll have to take the carbs apart soon as i get a chance.

so is swapping carbs from one of the larger bikes considered a performance upgrade?

i was looking at the cost of parts to rebuild the carbs and found a set of zx7r carbs that are mechanicly the same as my 95zx6r except the bore is 2mm larger (38mm instead of 36mm, the zx9r is 40mm) i figured i could either swap carbs or just scavenge parts.

You could swap. That used to be a common upgrade. You may lose some low end due to less velocity at low RPM because of the largerthrottle bores but may gain top end. You may also have to rejet because the ZX7 is jetted richer due to the extra CC's. You should just clean your carbs; spray them with carb cleaner and make sure that the float valve closes when you push up on the floats lightly.

yeah i don't really want to harm my low end since thats what i spend most of my time in. one thing about the gearing in these bikes is that i can't legally wind out any gears except first and some of second.

A big jump in numbers on a stock tuned motor. You will not like it.

Oh, I didn't realize it was 40mm; that is way too big. The bike would fall on it's face from take-off.

no the zx9r is 40mm, i posted that just for refference

the 7 that i'll be getting my parts from is 38
the stock 6 is 36

the increase in cross sectional area is 11.5%
