Breaking IN ?
Ok i see a lot of questions about how to break in motors , or what to do if you have to get on a highway.... I have built plenty cars motors mostly rotary engines i have done a few bike engines and some car, my instructer if you want to call him that, says this and i have heard this in many places, " break it in like your gonna drive it" whihc basiclly if some of you guys read sport bike magz, it also says it as well : if you driver your bike hard in the break in perios it will preform its best when driven hard, if you break it in slow, a motor broken in hard will preforma better then a motor broken in slow. Catch my drift??? Now i have personally seen this in the motors i built so however you plan to run your bike everyday is how you should break it in. Why does kawasaki and all the bikes manufacter have this long break in period. Thats pretty simple and that is because of liablity reason, so if somethign goes bad they say well we told you what to do. The only no no i have heard and that i have seen repeditly in how not to break in a motor was, do not run a brand no motor at a set RPM for long periods of time, keep it changing constantly so thats what i know on breaking in engines.. anyone for comments ????
well i think the factory would have a break in peroid for a reason, maybe because they spend so much money and desgining the bikes and from trouble shooting and experience they would know a thing or to about a proper break in peroid.
Just my 02. cents

I just finished my break in period. Took about 5 weeks total. Did I do it to the letter ? Nope... Can't say that I did. Did I redline it or ride it above the recomended RPM's constantly? Definately NOT! I kept the rev's under the recommended limits the vast majority of the time, but did ride it pretty hard within those limits. Making sure to accelerate hard and engine brake reguarly. I'm pretty sure I pissed off some drivers on my way to the back country roads with all my speed up/slow down/up/down/up/down/etc, but I didn't mind what they thought... I was breaking in my bike!
All I can say is be careful with that new engine of yours, the break in period will be over before you know it. And oh, be a little extra careful before your first service at 600 miles. Lots of stuff going on in there, not the least of which is little flakes of engine breaking loose into the oil... and do try to get your service ASAP after 600 miles... Don't put it off, just do it, you won't regret it.
For me, it was kind of like christmas... You know you got a present, but you're not quite sure what it is... The anticipation will kill you, but you'll forget all about all the time you waited as soon as you open it.

Well when im in six gear at about 4100 rpm's im about 50 mph. I want to go faster so would going about 65 mph at about 5500 rpm's.
Would this hurt anything during the break in peroid? It would just be highway driving

My break in was much like what Gerg discribed on his break in. Never went past 8K until the first oil change, then never went past 10k until 1k on the clock....then all hell broke loose [sm=badbadbad.gif]
