Personally, I think that not going over 4000 rpms for 1000 miles than opening it up is crazy. I kept it under 4000 for the first 500 miles, than I went up about 1000 rpms at 100 mile increments or so. At 1600 miles, I still have my shift light set at 12,500 and don't go over it.
The most important thing is to keep it at low rpms for the first 500 miles or until you first change the oil. The factory oil will not hold up at high rpms and will cause harm. After that you are on your own.
