04 636 oil light and valve knock
o.k. guys, I'm new to this forum but am a member of another forum for my car and they've really helped alot and I've also returned the favor. I have an 04 636 that went down very lightely and stayed running for maybe a minute, but now the oil light is on and the valves are knocking like crazy. I took the oil filter off and started it to make sure the oil pump was running and it was.changed the plugs and cleaned the air filter box cause a little oil got in there but still same results. is there anyone out there who had the same problems or any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Just seems like no oil is getting to the valves?

How long did you let it run with the new oil & oil filter? It takes 20-30 seconds sometimes for the oil light to go out because the oilpump has to suck the oil up the pickup tube and fill that cavity, then fill the oil filter (Always a good idea to fill the filter with oilfirstand then install it) and then it will pressurize the rest of the engine. I don't know why they designed it that way but it isn't good for the engine to be without oil pressure especially that long. If your oil light doesn't go out within 30 seconds, you may have worn out the main crankbearings due to oil starvatinwhile the bike was running on it's side. Make sure that you have enough oil, fill the filter and try starting it again until the oil light goes out. Don't put any load on the engine or rev it.

After you make sure there is plenty of oil, unplug the battery for a couple of minutes and tap the rear brake a few times with the battery unpluged to make sure there is no power at all. Plug the battery back in and see if the oil light goes out. If it doesn't, then the sensor probably got busted in the fall.

Pulling off the filter and cranking the engine (without starting) is the easiest way to check that the oil pump is working albeit the messiest way also.
"Oil pumps don't go bad" thats a good one, wait until that bike has some serious mileage, 40k or more. Also, if your 636 is "knocking" that is not normal, ticking is but definitly not knocking.

I'm sorry for the missunderstanding, I didn't run it with the filter off, I cranked it with no plugs in the bike. It was only over for about a 40 seconds or less. after changing the oil I let it run for about 20 seconds just to make sure I here the knock coming from up top. I don't know what the heck is blocking the oil from reaching the top to the valves and the sensor. I know that all 636's have a slight knock cause I have 2, but this is definitely no slight knock!
