I'll add a bit more. In the States, with minimal licencing rules, an awful of people only think they can ride. Many of them can't, let alone teach or offer advice to anyone else that's rooted in skill and experience.
That means don't take advice from any US rider unless you know his level of experience.
There are many good skilled US riders of course. Trouble is, you have no way of knowing if you're talking to one, or to some kid whose ego won't allow him to learn on a sensibly sized bike.
You should start on a bike that you hope to grow out of, not on a bike that you hope to grow into.

The 650R would be ideal for someone with riding experiance. You already have a 650 so the power will not scare you whereas a road 250 will leave you wanting more. I have test ridden, and intend buying, a Versys (same engine as the 650R) and I reckon it's a great bike. Personally I'd go for the er6n or the Versys but I don't want a fairing to write off Good luck with your desicion.
