Default Oil light after minor crash

Hello all, just wanted to say I'm a longtime reader and always read all the posts, but haven't commented because I'm a new rider. But anyways, I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer for, and I'm really hoping you can help me out. I had my first lay down (4 months since I bought my '02 500R). It wasn't too bad, I was coming out of a corner and the guy in front of me stopped suddenly and I stopped even more suddenly, fell over on my left side and didn't really even slide far (prob going only about 10mph). The bike started right back up and I was fine (thank goodness for my gear). However, the low oil pressure light came on, and I couldn't get it to go off, and I drove the rest of the way (about a mile) home with it still on. I still have plenty of oil according to the window, and no visible leaks (only a cracked fairing). I'm kinda stumped, I hope you can help me out. Thanks!

I'm thinking maybe the oil pressure sender wire could have come off during your lay-down, although it's not very likely. Or, the sender could have been damaged. You willprobably want to closely inspect the engine over. I don't know if the 500 engine has any exposed metal oil feed lines, but if it does, there could be the possibility of a kinked oil line somewhere.

Hope this helps some, and welcome to the forums.

The oil pressure sensor is on the left side. It sticks out of the crankcase a blue wire with a red stripe. If you take off the plastic cover by the shifter and look down between the exhaust and the engine you should see it. Good luck.

Glad you're okay Quinn.
Which side did you fall on?
It's almost certainly the oil-pressure sensor, but if you check under the cover per Mugwump's instruction and it's still properly connected, you might have a problem needing dealership or shop attention. It doesn't seem likely that you could have jarred it hard enough to damage the oil pressure relief valve, the oil pump, or one of the external oil lines in the head, but given the consequences if one of those things is the case, you don't want to take chances.
I hope it's just the sensor-wire. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

My buddy tipped over my bike when he was trying to get it on the center stand a while ago and the oil light came on....I ended up just running it for a little bit and it went off. I thought maybe some air bubbles got in or something from the bike tipping over.

Hey Pang.
It was running when your friend tipped it over? For how long?
The oil light came on because the oil-pump intake sucks the oil from the bottom of the oilpan. If the bike was laying it its side, the oil was no longer in the bottom of the oil pan, which means no oil in your oil pump, which means no oil getting where it needs to in order to protect your engine from chewing on itself.
I hope it wasn't for long...

This happened awhile ago, but it ran fine afterwards...it pretty much shut off immediately. I let it sit a bit, started it up...the light was on, but went off after about 30 seconds. I figure it's common for that to happen when your bike falls over on it's side and the oil stops flowing in the right direction.

haha, sorry GC. Bike is fine, the light went off after about 5 minutes of riding. I know thats longer than what everyone else has said for similar situations for them, but when I got back after the incident I checked out what markmeinteil said, but I didn't see any damage. Oil level is still good, and no more light. So it looks good. Thanks for all your help and conern
