So the general consensus is that I should change my spark plugs and then see if the problem is solved?

dose your ares use the achole enriched fules? if so there is a chanch of the fules pulling moisture out of the air and settleing to the bottom of the tank and or carb boul. if you change your plugs and the problem presist sifan out the botom of your tant into a clear container let it settle if it seperates into two or more layers than you have a water ishue adding dry gas wount fix the problem if you have achole inriched fules.

Hey Sheric.
If your bike will start and idle perfectly with no choke, then someone has been tampering with the jetting and/or pilot screw and it is running too rich.
Are you the original owner or did you buy the bike used? If so, do you still have access to the seller? Can you ask him if he made any changes to the carburetors?

If a bike starts and idles fine with no choke, it is too rich.

^^

it shouldn't be able to cold start right up without the choke. if it does, like what calimarichris said,it'll be running rich.

that extra fuel it is dumping in to help in the cold start will be bad when it eventually warms up due to running rich.

Its your jets, had the same thing with my 250. somebody messed with em. I think if you also turn screws all the way in and... 1 n' 1/4 out? not sure, don't listen to me then [8D]

But yeah, dealer should have it tuned for you then.

i was quoted $250 to have the carburator re-jetted... does that sound fair or should i just go to the dealer and have them do it instead?

The dealership will restore your stock settings for MUCH less than $250 and your bike will run great and last longer.
If you don't want to get the Factory Service Manual and do it yourself, I'd take it to a dealership.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.
Peace!
