which engine oil to use?
Hi All,
I bought a '01 last year, and now its low on oil. Decided to change it myself to save a few bucks, and went to the local PepBoys. But all the difference oil specs are confusing. first have to deal with the grades, which are ok to decipher. According to the manual, it could be SAE 10w-40, or 20w-50. Good, i was able to find a few brands. But then the API spec was SF,SH, or SJ with JASO MA. All the store carried were marked with API SM, and it says it exceeds the SF, SH etc., but never saw JASO MA anywhere.
What oil do you guys use? Any fav ones? Anything i should avoid?
Thanks a lot :-)

RE: which engine oil to use?
If you're going with an automotive oil, then I would suggest Castrol 10W40. Don't use an energy saving/conserving oil, the additives in that type of oil doesn't work well with a motorcycle clutch.
I think on my next oil change, I'm gonna go with AMSOIL motorcycle synthetic oil. The test results on that oil are just amazing. Click on the AMSOIL sponsor link here to read about their test results.

yeah, either go with the amsoil synthetic designed for wet clutches or get your oil from a bike shop, the lubricants designed for the wet clutch transmission are a little different than automotive oils
