Default resetting trip meter while moving

I was watching a video on youtube posted by sfninja. He makes videos about, among other things motorcycling-related, riding around on his 250R with tips for beginners and so on.
Check it out sometime. http://www.youtube.com/user/sfninja

However one of his videos mentions that his trip meter is broken, and then he gives a big warning about not resetting the trip meter while the bike is moving, as apparently this will mess up the trip meter mechanism and it will be rendered useless.

Is this the case? I usually just reset it right after I fill up at the gas station, so it's not a problem. But now I'm not going to press it while the bike is running just in case he's right [&:]

I have no idea if it's true or not. I have reset my trip while riding without having any problems, so maybe it was just some freak incident that it happened to this guy.

I honestly can't see how that would screw up the mechanism for the trip meter. I think it was just a freak coincidence (I know I fraked up the spelling on that one)
