I've had two accidents where I've been glad I've been wearing one.

One about 40 years ago at very slow speed - about walking speed. The back of my head came down on the edge of a kerb stone hard enough to split the shell. That would have been fatal.

The other, a couple of years ago, scraped enough off the shell of a full face helmet to show that without it I'd have lost about half of my face and one eye. I think death would have been a better option.

Wow this thread was from way back. Its a good thread though. I wear a helmet if I'm going to the end of the street, and always. Some friends of mine just got back from Hawaii and they said everyone was riding without helmets. Even if I lived in a state where it was not required I would wear one 100% of the time. Just like Insurance here in Washington, it may not be required but I got it.
