New with a klx
Hey guy Ive lurked a while while doing research before buying my 2006 KLX250S, its a great site. I'm in Southern IL for school, now I just need time to explore on the thumper!!
Thank you guys! Yes this place really has a wealth of knowledge. The first thing The site brought to my attention was the cam chain tensioner and now Im pondering a temp guage.
If anything, consider looking at the Thermobob. If you read about it and understand thermodynamics it makes sense to go with it. Check testimonials and this page has the most information at the bottom of the page.
As for temperature gauges, seems a waste in that the KLX already sports two radiators with a lot of cooling area and from what I've seen in the parts schematics the KLX300 does not run a fan at all. Same with the KLX650, the off road has no fan, the road model does. Having a 650 I can tell you the fan only kicks on briefly on extreme hot days when in stopped traffic or when stopped for a few minutes on a trail. I had no idea if it worked.
If it was up to me I might wire in an LED to indicate if the circuit is functioning and occasionally test the fan. The interesting part is that the temperature where the fan turns on is relatively low, I'm thinking around 220 degF, fairly low. Many auto engines run significantly higher temps.
I think for most riders the concern should be more about running too cold - thus the Thermobob. I actually would block out the large radiator on my KLX650 when temps dropped below around 40 degF to keep it up at a good level - the fan never did turn on when it was that cold out.
Unless you are running desert type heat, temp issues are more imagined than real.
By the way consider putting your general location in your settings so members have a better idea of how to give information, things that relate to climate or elevation conditions.
