Smile KLX250S Cam chain noise

I just wanted to thank the person who blogged about adjusting the cam chain on a KLX250S. The simple way was to loosen the two small 8mm bolts on the tensioner to aadjust it, it worked great. I backed one out about half way and slowly backed off the second one untill it clicked. Simple and easy!!!

I would not use that method however. See the caution notes in your manual.

So easy to put excess tension on your cam drive, isn't it. When it does it again are you going to stick something in there and smack it with something to jam the tensioner plunger in tighter yet? Take this as a mechanical warning:

Go do some study on the whole issue with cam drives. You might figure out that you are doing the same thing with your cam chain drive as you would by tightening your drive chain up excessively tight. Pulling on the cams and causing excessive wear on the sliders. By the way, when the bearing surface in a head gets damaged it ain't a cheap fix. That's the whole reason why I did manual cam chain tensioners, no mickey mouse methods. I talked it over with the two trained mechanics (about 25 years experience each on multiple brands and racing) who reworked my top end after the second tensioner took out the cam chains. The decision was well thought out.

Again, take it as a possible warning about doing something that isn't intended to be done.
