Default Rear Shock Warn Out

I just bought my nephew a 1996 KX60. He currently rides a modified TRX90 quad but wanted to try a bike. The KX60 is in immaculate condition. The only issue is that the rear shock is completely warn out. This is just a starter bike so I don't really want to dump money into a custom shock upgrade at this point. However, it's so soft / saggy now that it practically bottoms out when he sits on it.

So,I was wondering what my options are for now? Can I swap outthe current shock for a better shock from a newer KX60 / 65? Can I have this shock rebuilt and possibly put on a stronger spring? Or other suggestions?

My nephew is 10 andtall for his age. He weightsabout 70 pounds. This bike is a bit small for him but it's just a starter bike and I figured it was better to error on the small side rather than the big side. I'll upgrade him in the fall if he likes it.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks guys,

I'm not familar with a 96 but if the bike is immaculate how did the shock wear out? The shocks on newer KX65s are adjustable. You may be able to adjust the height AND the damping. The height adjustment is done by the large nut on the outside of the shock. A spring will rarely wear out. The damping is adjusted with a small flathead screw usually on one end of the shock. The damping can easily wear out.

Alternately, there are lots of shocks on Ebay. Stock shocks should be inexpensive ($100)but only a dealer might be able to tell if they fit your bike. Hope this helps!

yeah its sounds like you just need to adjust the spring preload, or maybe even rehit with some good old Nitrogen, I dont think the shock is shacked, unless the previous rider was a 160 lb 12 year old, hitting the Elly at Gatorback. now you might be courious where to get your fill on some Nitrogen, hmmmm class can anyone tell me how much % of nitrogen is in the air? 78%, now im not telling you to do Anything, but you can fill in the blanks

Not knowing drag stuff, but knowing a little on the track stuff. A little knowledge blends in every once in awhile.
