I've considered building or buying a tire changer or stand of some sort, but I can't let go of my tried and true, 16 gallon 90 wt Pennsoilbucket. It doubles as a trash can when not being used for a tire changer, so it doesn't take up extra room in the shop. It's the perfect height too. I place a towel over the edge of the barrell to protect the spokes and go to town. Works like a champ. And it keeps me in practice for the inevitable trailside fix.

here's mine. i think it's a 40 gallon grease can. i just glued a rubber hose to the rim of the can to protect the spokes. it's the perfect height for me and i'm 5'10".



cheap too. i picked the can and hose up at a friends garage. total cost?$0.00

Sorry guys I was out of town for a couple of days. I saw this come across the Blackberry, but had to wait until I got to a computer. Anyway, I bought this one at the shop when I bought the stand, the jackets and other gear. I forget the brand, I keep it at work, since my garage is shrinking as we speak. It works great, but to be honest, I like the 40 gal can better. I am always looking for a way to save space.

I like the diameter of deej's platform. The 40 gal is too narrow/small and if you lean into it, spokes can get bent.

The diameter on deej's is perfect (for the rear) as it allows the spokes to sit at their strongest point, right next to the rim, thanks deej.

i was going to put some cement in the bottom with a post going up above the rim to secure the tire on it until i changed a few tires with the can as it is. it works great just the way i have it.

that homemade one is so simple and slick....I thank you for posting...getting some great ideas through this thread I thought I had my mind made up to go with tubular steel, but after seeing that I am giving the wooden one 'due consideration as well..wood is just so easy to work with.
