Default Wheelie Techniques

I'm bored. Really effing bored, so I've been digging around on various techniques how to get that front wheel up and keep it up for a bit. Probably because I have riding itch, and my bike is 1000km away [:'(]

So what works for you guys? I've been reading alot about feathering the clutch, but i dont really understand the technique to it. And isnt that bad for the clutch?

I apologize for the pointless thread in advance, I've really got nothing to do at work here.

Funny riding pics would be cool too!

Cheers

I reccommend learning like this.... getting comfortable with the balance point is the big issue.... its alot easier to step of a mountain bike than the klx..... first gear, wack the throttle pull up on the bars and try to hold on and not go too far, if you do, rear brake it.....

I can't get it up just by pulling up on the bars. Not enough throttle response i guess. Either my positioning is no good or i'm too heavy (probably)

Hahaha dammit, I was going to edit that because I KNEW that would happen. I was originally typing out "I cant get it up just by pulling on it". Just as well.

Ok, let me preface this with a don't try this at home!
So the way I was taught (I'm not great and don't hold them for long) to do a wheelie on a dirt bike was like this;
Start with the bike facing a VERY slight up hill, even like the grade of a parking lot. You are going to have to have your balance down for sure. Rev the engine up over 5000 rpm's (probably varies upon gearing, pipes, ect.) and release the clutch quite a bit quicker than normal. The bike should pretty much jump, the trick is figuring out how to mantain it. But at least this brings up the front wheel. Don't forget to slide back a little on the seat.
Also be prepared with the rear brake covered or you might end up walking right off the back of the bike only to watch it ghost ride away. I have no idea how bad this is for the clutch, engine, chain, ect.
To be honest this method kinda scares me due to it's unpredictableness, but it sure is fun when it works. It will also have the same effect all the way down to 50cc bikes, you rev it high enough and anything will come up.

I just start off in first and get the rpms up and back the throttle off and rip it wide open and pull the bars, she is on the back wheel pretty quick and hold it open with the rear brake on slight and you should be able to pop right through the gears

Well, getting the front up is pretty easy. Keeping it there and riding it out at the balance point is another story. I can't do it, it's on my list to teach myself, but I don't get much time to practice and it takes practice.

Basically you first want to practice covering the rear brake, i.e., put your foot in position to press the rear brake by instinct where you don't even have to think about it. That will save you from looping out if you are about to go over and getting road rash, broken parts, or worse. Practice, practice, practice - this should be second nature before proceeding too far.

Then, practice popping the front up in 2nd, using the clutch. Just a little is fine. Progressively pop the front higher and keep it there longer, getting more and more comfortable.

Eventually, you will ride farther and farther before setting it down.

Ultimately, you want to get to the point where you are not just doing "acceleration" wheelies, i.e., where you just gas it and keep the front up for as long as the bike will accelerate, but when you run out of top end, it falls back to the ground. Instead, the really cool wheelies are the "balance" wheelies where you pop the front up higher and position your body back to counter balance, and maintain the balance point. When you master those, you can ride them indefinitely until you get tired or bored.

Just about anyone can do acceleration wheelies. The long distance balancing kind require more skill.

I recommend learning from the "Wheelie Master", Losiu, from Poland:

nobrakes,I agree on the balance point ,I learned to do the accel wheelies with the brake on slight and slam through the gears on my 2 smokes and still do them that way, still want to learn the slow balance ones though
