Default Wheel off different bike

My friend has found a new tire and rim he wants to give me. (I'm assuming it has caliper and sprocket) But it's off a Yamaha Serow. Now, I've been searching for a set of rims and tires for road rides. But never considered a set from a different bike.

I initially told him I'd take the tire and not the rim. But he insist it will work (or can be made to work).

With anyone else, I would be like "no thanks". But this guy is part of the old school Taiwanese generation that can do literally anything needed to make something work. His off road bike is a combination of three bikes! Engine from one bike; frame, cables, etc from another; and wheels from a third. Engine didn't have an oil cover, and he couldn't find one...so he found the closest thing he could and drilled and cut to make it work....not to mention a gasket. I've ridden with him and this Franken-bike works well believe it or not.

I'm all for trying out crap and seeing if it works...but...would you in this case? Assuming it fits (or can fit with some minor mods) would I be an accident waiting to happen? Or am I just too restricted by rules and lost all of my out of the box thinking? A free rim that works would be hard to pass up.
