I rode tight woods in the northeast with the 300 kit, I did have full exhaust, pumper carb, open airbox, ect and 14/48 gearing. I was also running valved suspension and a steering stabilizer.

Horsepower(or lack of it) with the 300 kit was not what was holding the bike back. Unless your in the desert or deep sand where every pony counts, in my opinion the 300 kit is all the power the chassis can really handle in agressive offroad riding, especially if you are on stock suspension.

I think some of us who grew up on 2 strokes miss the ability of doing a wheelie when the need arose. I'll never forget my first ride on a YZ480. Talk about wheelie capable. My old KDX250 could do it too, just not as easy. I think the throttle response on our bikes is the majority of the problem, that, and being a 4 stroke. With my mods, DJ kit and softer spring, would drilling the slide help with quicker throttle response or has anyone tried that?

Yes I think so. Silly not to as it's a totally free mod. Don't know how much difference it actually makes on the mushy slushy CV Keihin.

Drilling the slides helps it be a bit more responsive, but does not nake it a pumper carb.
CV's are on the bike for a reason, the same goes for pumper carbs......

The 310cc kit of upgrade I did on mine worked out great and very pleased with the power.
No it does not wheelie like my YZ250 did and i don't expect it to.

It's a very good dual purpose bike, the best in it's class, IMO......

Which one do you have/recommend? The vortex? The revolver?

From what I remember a while back, most were using the vortex.

Cool Got it!

I know old thread....

I have an SF with now a 351 kit. It will pull the wheel in first with just the throttle. Now I am going for second with a 36-68 pumper. I will let you know how it works out once I can drive it with no snow.

The last 250 I rode was an RM250 A whole different world and a long time ago.
